I met the world's smartest man today and asked him a question

In my hand, I hid a bird behind my back and asked him what am I hiding behind my back. Without thinking he said a bird. So I asked him is it dead or alive?
The world's smartest man thought (If i tell him the bird is alive, he may kill the bird by chocking it then reveal it to me. On the other Hand, if i tell him it's dead it may not be dead, the bird might be alive and he will reveal it to me. Either way i will lose....)
